St. Thomas the Apostle

Church of St. Rupert, Weisspriach/Lungau, Austria

The spear is often used as St. Thomas's attribute because one version of his martyrdom states that four officers of the King of India ran him through with their spears. His feet are bare, as is common in portraits of the Apostles, and he has the full beard and full of head of hair typical of his images in the West.

The painting is one of twelve portraits of the Apostles that line the walls of the nave.
